On Thursday 20 July 2017, the North Dorset Cricket Association youth cricket season concluded with the U15 Cup Final and Presentation Evening held at Shaftesbury Cricket Club.
This year saw 11 Cricket clubs from across North Dorset enter 37 teams of boys and girls across the four age groups from under 9 to under 15 running coaching sessions and games from April. In addition, many clubs have been running the ECB All Star cricket sessions for 5 to 8 year old’s to get them interested in the game. The NDCA would like to thank all the clubs and coaches who give up their time coach and manage throughout the summer and beyond.
Thursday saw a repeat of the 2016 final between Stalbridge and Shaftesbury which was always expected to be a tight game and the large crowd who had turned up for the seasons presentations were not disappointed. Stalbridge won the toss and asked Shaftesbury to bat first and they made a very positive start, scoring at 5 runs an over with 54 runs on the board at the half way mark. A number of wickets fell quickly and the runs slowed with an excellent 4 overs of bowling by C McKinnon taking 4 wickets for 12 runs supported by M Williams and J Stockley who took 2 wickets each. Shaftesbury were all out at the end of the 19th over with 83 runs on the board.
Stalbridge started steadily with the openers putting on 25 for the first wicket and finding themselves half way to the total after 10 overs. The game then turned on its head with tight bowling from the trio of Ben’s, Cochrane, Standfield and Stokes (always good to have a player in your team with the same name as an England International), with 2 overs remaining Stalbridge required 15 runs to win with 2 wickets in hand. Stokes picked up a wicket in the 19th over and Stalbridge were all out in the last over for 73. Shaftesbury won by 10 runs.
After the game the presentations for both the Winter and Summer competitions were made with the trophies being handed out by the Associations President Mr Clive Moore and Head Coach Ben Skipworth.
